What works in your browser
Everything runs on your device, so what you can create depends on the browser. The last column is checked live in the browser you are using now and always wins over the table.

Good for every M4A
Voice memos
Short mono recordings convert in moments and stay small at 128 kbps.
Whole albums
Add many files at once; results are named after the originals and can be saved as one ZIP.
Honest about DRM
Protected purchases are recognised and explained instead of producing a silent or broken file.
Frequently asked questions
Is M4A to MP3 free, and are my recordings uploaded?
It is free and works without an account. Voice memos and songs are converted by your browser and never uploaded, so personal recordings stay on your device.
Will converting M4A to MP3 reduce the quality?
A little, because AAC is decoded and re-encoded. With an MP3 bitrate equal to or higher than the M4A's, you will not hear a difference. If you only need the file on Apple devices, there is no need to convert at all.
How do I convert iPhone voice memos to MP3?
In the Voice Memos app, tap a recording, choose Share → Save to Files, then open this page in Safari, tap Choose files and pick the memo. Convert to MP3 at 128 kbps Mono for the smallest file that still sounds clear.
How long does it take?
M4A to MP3 runs at roughly 30 times real time on a computer and about 8 times on a phone, so a one-hour recording takes two to eight minutes.
Which browsers convert M4A to MP3?
Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all do. Apple Lossless (ALAC) M4A files need a browser that can decode ALAC; if yours cannot, the file shows a clear message instead of producing a broken MP3.
What happens to quality
M4A files hold AAC sound (or, less often, Apple Lossless). Zebra Convert decodes the AAC and encodes an MP3 with LAME at the bitrate you choose. Converting from one lossy format to another always loses a little, so pick a bitrate at least as high as the original: voice memos are around 64 kbps, so a 128 kbps MP3 keeps everything, while music bought from iTunes at 256 kbps is best kept at 256 or 320 kbps.
The sample rate is kept when MP3 supports it (44.1 or 48 kHz), and mono recordings such as voice memos stay mono, which also keeps the file small. Songs protected with DRM, such as older iTunes purchases with the .m4p extension or Apple Music downloads, cannot be converted by any app and are reported as protected.
