What works in your browser

Everything runs on your device, so what you can create depends on the browser. The last column is checked live in the browser you are using now and always wins over the table.

Instant copies work in every browser. Without WebCodecs (older browsers) re-encoding is not available, but MP3 and WAV files can still be made.

How to convert Video to GIF

  1. Choose a video file. Short clips work best; for a longer video, open ⋯ on the file and set a start and an end.
  2. GIF is selected. Set the size (longest side), the frames per second and the number of colours.
  3. Press Convert. Frames are reduced to a palette in the background, so the page stays responsive.
  4. Download the GIF and post it in a chat, a README or a presentation, or share it straight from your phone.

Better GIFs

  • No palette flicker

A shared palette for each scene keeps backgrounds steady instead of shimmering from frame to frame.

  • Exact timing

Frame delays add up to the clip's real length, so the animation is neither faster nor slower than the video.

  • Loop or play once

GIFs loop forever by default; untick Loop for an animation that stops on its last frame.

Frequently asked questions

Is the video to GIF converter free, and is there a watermark?

It is free and adds no watermark or logo. The video is processed by your browser, so the clip is never uploaded and you can make as many GIFs as you like.

Why is the GIF limited to 60 seconds?

Every GIF frame is stored as a full image, so long GIFs become very large and slow to load, and building them needs a lot of memory. The limit is 60 seconds and 1,500 frames on computers and 30 seconds on phones; use Trim to pick the best part.

Will the GIF look worse than the video?

A little, usually: GIF allows at most 256 colours per frame, so smooth gradients can show bands and fine detail softens at smaller sizes. Keep 256 colours and turn on "Smooth gradients" for film and photos; 64 or 128 colours are fine for screen captures and cartoons.

How do I make the GIF smaller?

Lower the size to 320 or 480 pixels, choose 8 or 10 frames per second, use 128 or 64 colours, or trim the clip. Turning off "Smooth gradients" also saves space. Each change updates the estimate under the file.

How long does it take to make a GIF?

Usually a few seconds: a computer processes about 25 frames per second and a phone about 8. A 10-second GIF at 10 fps has 100 frames, so it is done in about 4 seconds on a laptop.

Which browsers can make GIFs from video?

All current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. The browser only needs to be able to show the video frames; it does not need a video encoder, so GIFs work even where MP4 re-encoding does not.

What happens to quality

A GIF can show only 256 colours per frame, so every frame is reduced to a palette. Zebra Convert builds the palette from the first frame and keeps it while the scene stays the same, which avoids the flicker of a new palette on every frame; at a cut to a new scene it computes a fresh palette so the colours stay right. "Smooth gradients" adds an even dither pattern that hides banding in skies and skin tones, at the cost of a slightly larger file.

GIF files grow quickly with size and length: a 10-second clip at 480 pixels and 10 frames per second is often 2–5 MB. That is why the converter allows up to 60 seconds on computers and 30 seconds on phones, and why 480 px at 10 fps is the default. Sound is always dropped, because GIF has no audio. Frame timing is written in hundredths of a second, so the GIF plays at the speed of the video.
