What works in your browser

Everything runs on your device, so what you can create depends on the browser. The last column is checked live in the browser you are using now and always wins over the table.

Instant copies work in every browser. Without WebCodecs (older browsers) re-encoding is not available, but MP3 and WAV files can still be made.

How to convert MP4 to MP3

  1. Add one or more videos, or audio files saved from a video app.
  2. MP3 is selected. Pick the bitrate – 192 kbps is a good default – and Stereo or Mono.
  3. Press Convert. Extracting sound is quick: usually many times faster than the video plays.
  4. Download the MP3 files, or all of them in one ZIP, and play them in any music app, car or speaker.

More than a rip

  • LAME inside

MP3 files are encoded with LAME (through lamejs), loaded only when you make an MP3 and used unmodified under the LGPL.

  • Any video in

MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM videos all work, as do audio files such as M4A, WAV and FLAC.

  • Cut out the part you need

Take a song or a quote out of a long recording by setting a start and an end before converting.

Frequently asked questions

Is MP4 to MP3 free? Does the video get uploaded?

Free, unlimited and without registration. The audio is extracted and encoded in your browser, so the video itself stays on your device – useful for recordings of meetings, lessons or family moments.

What bitrate should I pick for MP3?

128 kbps is fine for speech, podcasts and audiobooks; 192 kbps for everyday music; 256 or 320 kbps if you care about every detail. Higher bitrates make bigger files but never better sound than the source.

Will the MP3 sound worse than the video?

Slightly, in theory, because the sound is decoded and compressed again. In practice, at 192 kbps or more the difference is not audible for most people. Choose M4A instead to copy AAC sound from an MP4 without any re-encoding.

How long does it take to extract the audio?

Typically 30 or more times faster than real time on a computer and around 8 times on a phone, so a one-hour video becomes an MP3 in two to eight minutes.

Which browsers can extract MP3 from MP4?

All current browsers can. In Safari 16.4 to 18 some sound formats have to be decoded in one go, which limits very long videos on iPhone; the file row warns you before converting and suggests trimming.

What happens to quality

The sound in a video is usually AAC or Opus. To make an MP3, Zebra Convert decodes it and encodes it again with LAME, the best-known MP3 encoder. At 192 kbps – the default – speech and most music sound the same as the original; 256 or 320 kbps is worth it for music you will hear on good headphones, while 128 kbps keeps podcast and lecture files small.

Because MP3 is a lossy format, converting cannot add quality the video's sound did not have: a phone video recorded at 128 kbps will not improve at 320. Stereo stays stereo and surround sound is mixed down to stereo; choose Mono for speech to halve the size. The picture is ignored, so even a long video gives a small MP3, and if you only need part of it, trim the file first.
