Why convert JPG to PNG
PNG is lossless: once a picture is a PNG, saving it again and again never adds new compression damage. That makes PNG a good working format when you plan to crop, annotate or retouch a photo several times, or when an app, printer service or form accepts PNG only.
Converting does not make a JPG sharper. The blur and blockiness that JPG compression already added stay in the image, and the PNG is usually two to five times bigger because it stores every pixel exactly. Keep the original JPG if all you need is to share the photo.
The PNG gets no transparent background by itself: a JPG has no transparency, so the result is fully opaque. Camera information such as GPS location is not copied into the PNG, and photos taken sideways are turned upright, the way your phone shows them.
How to use the JPG to PNG Converter
- Choose JPG or JPEG files, or drop them onto the page. Photos straight from a phone or camera work fine.
- PNG is lossless, so there is no quality setting. Optionally pick a smaller or exact size if the photo is very large.
- The PNG files are created right away; the list shows the size of each new file.
- Download each PNG, or download all of them together as a ZIP.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting JPG to PNG improve the quality?
No. PNG keeps exactly what is in the JPG, including any compression artifacts. It only prevents further losses when you edit and save the picture again later.
Why is my PNG so much bigger than the JPG?
PNG compresses without throwing anything away, and photos contain fine noise that lossless compression cannot shrink much. A 3 MB phone photo can easily become a 10–15 MB PNG.
Can I make the background of my JPG transparent?
Not automatically: a JPG has no transparent pixels to keep. Converting to PNG gives a format that supports transparency, so you can remove the background afterwards in an image editor and save it again as PNG.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The JPG files are decoded and saved as PNG inside your browser, so they never leave your device. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page has loaded.
