How much smaller WebP really is

Google designed WebP for the web, and in typical photos it saves 25–35% compared with JPG at equal visual quality. On an image-heavy page that is often the single biggest speed gain, which also helps your Core Web Vitals and search ranking.

Converting a JPG means compressing an already compressed picture. For the best result, start from the largest, highest-quality JPG you have, and use a WebP quality of about 75–85: lower values save more bytes but can blur fine textures such as hair, grass or fabric.

All current browsers display WebP, including Safari since version 14. If you must support very old browsers, serve WebP with a JPG fallback in a picture element. Resize photos to the size the page shows them at – that saves far more than any format change.

How to use the JPG to WebP Converter

  1. Choose the JPG photos for your website, or drop a selection onto the page.
  2. Pick a WebP quality (80 is a good start) and, if the photos are larger than your layout needs, a smaller size or an exact width.
  3. Compare the original and WebP sizes shown for each file and adjust the quality if needed.
  4. Download the WebP files individually or as a ZIP, ready to upload to your site.

Frequently asked questions

Which browsers support WebP images?

Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Safari 14 or newer, on desktop and mobile. That covers practically every visitor today.

What WebP quality should I use for a website?

Start at 80 and look at a few photos at full size. Lower to 70–75 for large background images and raise to 85–90 for product photos where detail matters.

Can I resize the photos at the same time?

Yes. Choose half or quarter size, or type an exact width such as 1600 pixels; the height follows the original proportions. Resizing is the easiest way to save even more.

Are my photos uploaded to convert them?

No. The conversion happens in your own browser with its built-in WebP encoder, so your photos stay on your device.
