Why websites give you WebP files
Most large websites serve images as WebP because it is roughly a quarter to a third smaller than JPG at similar quality, so pages load faster. When you right-click and save such an image, you get the .webp file the site delivered.
Every current browser can show WebP, but plenty of other software still cannot: older versions of Microsoft Office and Photoshop, some photo printers and kiosks, many online forms and messaging apps. JPG opens everywhere, which is why converting is often the quickest fix.
WebP can be transparent and animated; JPG is neither. Transparent areas are filled with the background color you choose, and for an animated WebP the first frame is saved. Use WebP to PNG through the main image converter if you need to keep the transparency.

Frequently asked questions
Why can I not open WebP files on my computer?
Many programs were written before WebP became common and never added support for it. Converting to JPG gives you a file that every viewer and editor understands.
Will I lose quality converting WebP to JPG?
Both formats are lossy, so there is a small second generation of compression. At quality 90 or above the difference is not visible in normal viewing.
What happens to animated WebP files?
JPG holds a single picture, so the first frame of the animation is saved. For moving images, convert the animation with a video tool instead.
Is there a limit on file size?
There is no fixed limit; it depends on your device memory. Typical web images convert instantly, and you can convert up to 100 files in one go.
Do I need to install anything?
No. The converter runs on this page in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, on computers and phones, with nothing to install and no account.
