What goes into an ICO file

An ICO file is a small container that holds the same icon at several sizes, so every place that shows it can pick the sharpest one: 16 and 32 pixels for browser tabs and bookmarks, 48 for Windows Explorer, and 256 for large Windows icons and shortcuts.

Each size is stored as a PNG inside the ICO, which keeps full transparency and has been supported by Windows since Vista and by every current browser. Start from a square PNG of at least 256 × 256 pixels; a non-square logo is centered on a transparent square so it is never stretched.

To use it as a favicon, place favicon.ico in the root folder of your website and add a link element with rel="icon" pointing at it. Many sites also keep a 180-pixel PNG for Apple touch icons, which you can make with the main image converter.

How to use the PNG to ICO Converter

  1. Choose a PNG, ideally square and at least 256 × 256 pixels. Other formats such as JPG, WebP or SVG work too.
  2. Tick the sizes to include. 16, 32 and 48 pixels are enough for a favicon; add 256 for a Windows application or shortcut icon.
  3. The ICO file is built immediately with every selected size inside.
  4. Download favicon-ready ICO files one by one, or all of them as a ZIP.

Frequently asked questions

Which sizes does a favicon.ico need?

16 × 16 and 32 × 32 pixels cover browser tabs and bookmarks; 48 × 48 is used by Windows. Including 256 makes the file larger, which is only worth it for desktop icons.

Will my logo keep its transparent background?

Yes. Every size inside the ICO is stored as a 32-bit PNG with its alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent areas are kept.

My logo is not square. What happens?

It is scaled to fit inside each square size and centered, with transparent space added on the shorter side. Nothing is cropped or stretched.

Do I still need favicon.ico in 2026?

Browsers also accept PNG and SVG favicons, but a favicon.ico in the site root is still requested by many browsers, bots and tools, so providing one avoids 404 errors and missing icons.
