What changes when PNG becomes JPG

PNG stores every pixel exactly, which is perfect for interface screenshots but wasteful for photographs: a phone photo exported as PNG is often 5 to 10 times bigger than the same picture as a good JPG. Saving it as JPG at quality 85–90 shrinks it dramatically, and on a normal screen you will not see a difference.

JPG cannot store transparency. Wherever the PNG is transparent or semi-transparent, the converter paints the background color you pick – white by default, which matches documents and most web pages. For a logo on a dark slide, pick black or the slide color instead.

Text and hard edges are where JPG compression shows first, as faint halos around letters. For screenshots with small text keep the quality at 92 or above, or consider PNG to WebP, which keeps both the sharpness and the transparency.

How to use the PNG to JPG Converter

  1. Choose your PNG files or drop them onto the page. You can also paste a screenshot straight from the clipboard.
  2. Set the JPG quality (90 is a good default) and the background color that replaces transparent areas.
  3. Each PNG turns into a JPG immediately; the list shows the new size and how much smaller it is.
  4. Download the JPG files one by one, or press Download all to get a single ZIP.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to convert private screenshots here?

Yes. The PNG files are read and converted by this browser tab only. Nothing is uploaded, so screenshots with personal or business information stay on your computer or phone.

Why did the transparent background turn white?

JPG has no transparency, so transparent pixels must get a color. White is the default; change the background color before converting to use any other color.

Which JPG quality should I choose?

Use 85–90 for photos and 92–95 for screenshots with text. Below about 70 you will start to notice blocky areas and halos around sharp edges, although the file becomes smaller still.

Will the JPG be smaller than the PNG?

Almost always for photos and detailed images. Flat graphics with few colors, such as simple icons, can be smaller as PNG; the list shows the size change for every file, so you can keep whichever is better.

Can I convert a whole folder of PNG files?

Select or drop up to 100 PNG files at once. They are converted one after another, and Download all puts every JPG into one ZIP file.
